"Gertie" $190.00

"Gertie" is my latest photo collage. This piece is archivally matted and framed and measures 11" X 14".

"Gertie" continues a long, ongoing series of photo collage that I first began around 1988. I produced several dozen of these using "found" tin type photographs between 1988 and 1994. I then revisited this series a couple of other times briefly in the late 90's and then again in 2010 for our show at Edgewood Gallery in Syracuse, NY.

I enjoy doing them and every now and then I come across more tin types and sometime shortly thereafter produce new pieces.

Work from this series has been included in several gallery shows in New York as well as a number of group exhibitions in museums and other venues. The series has won awards and been critically reviewed. Some good, some not as much, but overall mostly positive. To date most have sold, although I do have a few that have hung around.

"Gertie" will be one of several new pieces that I will have on display at Gallery On First for the Sanford Art Walk this Friday, 6-9pm.

"Riddle in Yellow & Black"

After a long time I finally have some new encaustic work coming along. This is the first I consider finished and have framed up. The piece measures 16 " X 16" framed. "Riddle in Yellow & Black" is matted with a black core, black mat and a contemporary simple black wooden frame. "OK, so I stole part of the title from a song by my favorite band, Donna The Buffalo. The fact is that all non representational abstraction, at least for me is an evolution. The process is such that as you work on a painting it leads you though a series of changes. I have to make conscious decisions about where to go next, where or what not to do and most important when to stop and call it done. It really is a Conscious Evoution."

Atlantic Center for the Arts is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary artists' community and arts education facility dedicated to promoting artistic excellence by providing talented artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world's most distinguished contemporary artists in the fields of music composition, and the visual, literary, and performing arts. Community interaction is coordinated through on-site and outreach presentations, workshops and exhibitions.

History

The idea of a quiet place where artists could go to focus on their art and work with internationally renowned "masters" in a tranquil, natural environment blossomed in 1977 in the mind of Doris Leeper, a painter, sculptor and active environmentalist. A forthright, determined, passionate woman, Leeper soon persuaded friends and community members to join in her vision. In 1979, she convinced The Rockefeller Foundation to provide a challenge grant that soon was matched. This $25,000 in seed money unofficially birthed Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Soon after, when a prime piece of property became available on the shores of Turnbull Bay, a tidal estuary west of town, Leeper raised the $50,000 necessary to buy the 10-acre plot. Three years later, five main buildings were completed. Over the years, five more buildings were constructed and an additional 59 acres were purchased. In 1997, the Leeper Studio Complex was completed. Comprised of six buildings connected to existing structures by raised wooden walkways, it includes a library and studios for painting, sculpture, dance, music/recording, and theater. In addition to increasing artists' workspace to 12,000 sq. ft., the buildings provide additional presentation space for public programs and increased opportunities for partnerships. The entire facility is handicap-accessible.
The residency program brings together internationally-acclaimed master artists from different disciplines with talented artists who are selected by the masters. The artists attend a three-week residency session that includes master classes, individual critiques, opportunities for collaboration, and private studio time. Atlantic Center for the Arts officially opened in 1982 for the first residency with author James Dickey, sculptor Duane Hanson and composer David Del Tredici (photo pictured above). Since then, over 121 interdisciplinary residencies have take place, featuring 360 Master Artists and over 2,350 Associate Artists, 30% from Florida. Atlantic Center is often the starting point for new works which go on to be produced at national performance centers such as the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, the Spoleto Festival, Jacob's Pillow, the Walker Art Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Only after firmly establishing an exceptional artists' residency with extensive outreach programs did Atlantic Center for the Arts broaden its mission to promote arts education to the local community by providing exhibition opportunities for outstanding Florida artists and educational programs for children and adults. In 1991, Atlantic Center at Harris House opened and the community arts program had its beginning. Located in the heart of a revitalized downtown, an historic home was converted to a cultural community center that, since its inception, has assumed a leadership role in providing arts education programs for children and cultural enrichment for adults.
The vision of founder Doris Leeper lives on today as Atlantic Center continues to nurture the artists of tomorrow who are working today to create what will become our cultural heritage.

Cherie Dacko's "Pop Up" Gallery

Cherie Dacko, a fixture in the Sanford Art scene opened her "Pop Up" Gallery for two days in time for the beginning of the holiday shopping season.

I photographed her walking out of the gallery on Friday evening during the Sanford Art Walk.

The space looks exceptional. It's too bad that it's not open all the time. Congratulations Cherie! I hope it was a fruitful couple of days.

I am having a lot of fun with my new plasma cutter and welder. Although I have done a lot of sculpture in the past, the steel work was fabricated from my designs. Most of my work was in concrete, wood, found objects or fiberglass.

My welding skills have a long way to go, but I'm already beginning to get comfortable with it.

I am doing a series of garden sculptures as well as table top and free standing pieces for indoors.

The garden pieces are modern, free form and organic.

I was up early this morning and after a couple of cups of coffee I thought I would venture down to the marina to see the sun rise and take some photographs. As luck would have it, it was the first real foggy morning since we arrived. Not much of a sunrise so I decided to work with what I had. Here are a couple of shots from this morning in Sanford, Fla. These shots were not going to work on their own so I manipulated them and this what I came up with. Enjoy!

After a crazy whirl wind summer, packing, moving and unpacking (still not done unpacking), we have settled into our new working studio and gallery space at Gallery On First in Sanford.

We are enjoying the incredible Florida weather and our new city. Sanford is a diverse, culturally rich, historic small city on the shores of Lake Monroe in Central Florida.

We are enjoying meeting the folks here and everyone has welcomed us with their warm southern hospitality. Many of the talented local artists have stopped by to say hello and wish us well.

We are very happy to be here and look forward to making art in our new studio space!

Sanford Florida - "Alive After 5" April 2011

We are back from our first winter in Florida. We absolutely fell in love with our new city, Sanford.

Sanford is a small city 20 miles northeast of Orlando and about 30 miles from the Canaveral National Seashore and the Atlantic Ocean. Sanford has a diverse population of 60,000 people. The city has a funky vibe and is home to artists, musicians and latter day hippies. Sanford sits on the shores of Lake Monroe and boasts a beautiful Marina and the recently completed "River Walk". Downtown and the historic district are famous for brick paved streets lined with Live Oaks with Spanish Moss and historical architecture.

Many local eateries, bistros and bars, many with out door seating compliment the art galleries, antique shops and boutiques in the down town area.

Each month the city closes down about five city blocks on the second Thursday of the month and puts on a mini "Mardi Gras" type street party known as "Alive After 5". Every month it has a theme that is appropriate to the time of year. Several thousand folks attend to hear live music and sample food and beverages from local establishments.

The photos here are from this past April. The theme in April was "Shrimp Shindig".

"October's Children" SOLD

This collage is part of a series I began working on in the late 1980's and continued with until the mid 1990's. I explored combining photography and painting using both my own images as well as those I found at flea markets and antique shops.

This body of work broke down mainly into two groups, figurative and non figurative and then again into sub groups of modern (my own) images and found antique images.

This was a fairly fresh and cutting edge thing I was doing at the time, but has since been done and even over done by many other artists. I took a lot of flack in a recent review of my work for these pieces. The show was somewhat of a retrospective so I felt it was certainly worth including some of these works, as they represented over a decade of my career. The criticism was fair and as I stated at the time, looking at them today they may seem dated and revisiting something that has been overdone, but keeping in mind they were done twenty years ago, I think changes how one views them.

Regardless of the criticism, these pieces remain popular and I have now sold almost all of them from that time period. I have less than a half dozen left from well over 60 pieces completed, framed and exhibited from that body of work. This particular piece, "October's Children", is a good example of the work I was doing in 1992. This collage sold yesterday and will be a part of a very fine regional art collection.

Yolanda Tooley captures "The Soul of America" in a collection of powerful images of the streets of New Orleans. The show is the first time the artist has shown this series of images in a solo exhibition.

The photographs of musicians and buildings capture the spirit of New Orleans and in Yolanda's style, she takes already strong images and manipulates them into an altered state. Like free form jazz, the images come alive with hand coloring and solarization, giving them a unique flair seemingly making the music come alive.

In addition to Yolanda's aesthetic sense and ability to compose interesting photographs, she also adheres to strict archival traditions, both in her darkroom techniques and presentation. She uses only the highest quality materials and time tested methods in creating her work. In an age where digital rules the day, Yolanda Tooley employs "old school" traditional black and white photographic principals.

Ok, so the Central Square gallery has closed after a 25 year run, that does not mean you have seen the last of us. Not by any means. Deb and I will be moving to Sanford, Florida sometime between now and Christmas. (We have to wait on the closing of the real estate transactions on our two properties here in Central Square)

Blog postings may be infrequent until we get settled in Florida. Once we do get the move completed, we will keep you up to date on all that is happening there with shows and our new exhibition space at Gallery on First.

Our CNY friends and followers will also be able to learn of our progress on our new NY studio at our property in Bernhards Bay and when we will return for the summer.

3rd Annual Plein Air Paint Out

The Annual Plein Air Paint Out has become THTLT’s “signature event.” It is a unique way to recognize the diversity, beauty and magnificence of the region. A Paint Out is a group of artists painting together, typically en plein air – a French term meaning “in the fresh air.” As artists paint outside, the public is invited to visit with the artists, observe their work in progress and ask questions. The event began in 2008 at the Trenton Falls Gorge Trails, and 2009 at Constable Hall.

The 2010 Plein Air Paint Out will be held Saturday, September 25th at the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. The event is in conjunction with the 15th Annual Salmon River Hatchery Open House and the celebration of "National Hunting and Fishing Day." The hatchery holds activities, seminars, and demonstrations throughout the day, geared toward youth and families.

The Plein Air Paint Out will feature artists painting at both the hatchery and the Salmon River Falls. Paintings created throughout the day will be auctioned off that evening at the benefit auction. The auction will be held at the fish hatchery and all proceeds will benefit Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust.

Southern Vermont Arts Center - SVAC

On a recent trip home to Vermont, Debe and I paid a visit to one of our favorite places to spend a Sunday afternoon, the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester.

I have talked in the past about growing up in the culturally rich southern Vermont area. The artists who lived in the region, some who were neighbors and friends. The places we visited like the Stratton Arts Festival and SVAC. These are some of the places that instilled in me and nurtured my love for the arts. These are the places that informed me early on and continue to do so today.

The Southern Vermont Arts Center is a beautiful old estate that has evolved over decades to become a first rate art museum with it's galleries in the original Yester House Gallery, the Wilson Museum and the Arkell Pavilion. In addition to wonderful exhibitions SVAC offers a variety of art classes for beginners and advanced programs for emerging and mid career artists. The Arts Center also offers music and performing arts programs to the region.

Any visit to southern Vermont is not complete without a visit to SVAC.

Below are some photographs taken of sculpture on the grounds of the 200 plus acre estate nestled in the mountains in Manchester.

Husband and wife artists K.V. and Debe Abbott share a visual aesthetic like some couples share life. Their mixed-media works share a common energy and expressiveness that, at times, make it difficult to discern one artist's pieces from the other. While Debe's palette leans to the brighter tones, Kevin's exudes a more subdued tonality, but even that isn't a constant.

Through Sept 10, visitors to the Edgewood Gallery on Tecumseh Road can take in a 25-year survey of works by this enterprising couple. The Abbotts are the owners of Abbott's Lake Country Studio, a custom framing workshop and art studio located in the heart of Central Square, but they are also actively creating their own work, as this show demonstrates. (In addition to works by the Abbotts, there's also a small assortment of high-fired stoneware vessels by Brian Brickley on view.)

Besides color, another distinguishing feature between the couple's styles is their sense of gesture, or the weight of the marks they make. Generally, Debe's pieces are more detailed, employing smaller strokes of color while Kevin typically works in broader visual phrases. Both artists work with collage elements, although Debe has a far lighter hand in what she uses and how she applies it.

You see Kevin's use of collage most clearly in a set of works incorporating old photographs into thickly textured mixed-media surfaces. These pieces -- "Party Girls," "Brothers," "October's Children," "Sister," -- have dark, richly toned and layered surfaces into which Kevin situates an old portrait photograph. This is not a new idea and unfortunately, this execution does little to further it.

The photos sit atop these textured surfaces like postage stamps stuck to an envelope -- obvious and too deliberate in their placement. The idea would have been far more effective had Kevin prepared or treated the photos in some way. A soft white wash, a piece of finely meshed painted fabric or metal placed atop the photographs would have softened the effect of these images.

They would emerge from the piece like the faded memories he suggests they are, with a whisper instead of a shout. There are other pieces, however, which demonstrate a solid ability to move paint around a surface, create lush textures and engage a diverse palette of colors.

Debe is best known as a traditional landscape painter, but the pieces in this show are decidedly non-representational. Having said that, it's easy to find elements of the landscape in many of her works. "Desert Dawn" and "Back to Huachuca," while restrained in detail, capture the softly lilting nature of the desert's terrain.

Her palette is a rich coppery brown to which she adds collaged pieces of corrugated paper or metal, energizing the picture plane.

Texture is also a critical element in Debe's work, which she achieves through the application of thick daubs and swathes of paint, or collaging meshed fabrics or other textured materials on to her base surface. Sometimes she works back into the painted surface, as in "Festival," cutting geometric patterns into the paint revealing substrata of colors.

Seeing this show of the Abbotts' works makes me wonder if they share a common studio space. Their pieces seem to flow from one to another, with varying differences in color and texture, like slightly different inflections in two well-acquainted voices.

Organizers of the Art Literally benefit have stirred up the pots this year for their third annual show and sale.

The event benefits the Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library and the Red Cross of Northern New York. Last year's event raised $11,931, which was split between the two organizations, according to Art Literally board member Maxine M. Quigg.

This year's show and sale will be a juried event. The jurors are Mary Ellen Kalil Shevalier, an art teacher at South Jefferson Central School District, Adams, and Kari Robertson, an artist and former art educator who is the president of the North Country Arts Council.

A donor, who organizers said wishes to remain anonymous, has donated 20clay flowerpots for this year's Art Literally. The containers will be decorated by artists and be sold in addition to items in the regular Art Literally art sale.

This has been a good week at the gallery. This is the second painting of mine that went out the door. We also sold one of Deb's and a couple of paintings by Edward J. Elhoff.

"China Town Revisited" is an encaustic painting I did back in the early 1990's and was part of a large body of work I did at that time. These paintings are strong in color and very expressionistic. I have sold most of the paintings from that series. Only a handful remain in addition to a couple that we have kept and are not for sale.

The gentleman who purchased this painting has his eye on a couple of others and is also considering commissioning a large canvas.

Fantasies and Fairy-Tales: Maxfield Parrish and the Art of the Print
April 29 - July 11, 2010

During the height of Maxfield Parrish's popularity in the 1920s and 1930s, he was the most reproduced American artist of his era. Disseminated through magazine covers, book illustrations, calendar pads, advertisements and color reproductions, Parrish's images occupied a ubiquitous presence in popular visual culture. While recent exhibitions of Parrish have focused mainly on his original oil paintings, Fantasies and Fairy-Tales represents the first comprehensive sampling of Parrish's work in a variety of printed media. His whimsical designs based on fairy-tales and nursery rhymes were a favorite of early twentieth century advertisers.

Tickets to this exhibition will cost $10 non-members, $8 children under 18, students (w/ college ID), Military (w/ ID), and seniors (65+). Everson Members and children under 5 are admitted free. A special family rate is available for $30 (including 2 adults and 4 dependent children). Group tours are available at a special rate of $8 per person, must be booked in advance. K-12 school tours will be offered at no charge, must be booked in advance through the Education Department. Tickets may be purchased in advance at everson.org, or during the exhibition at the Everson Ticket Desk.

"Walking in China Town"

During my recent trip to San Francisco I stayed at the Hilton in the finacial district. China Town is right out the front door, so I enjoyed walking around exploring and taking photographs. I had several opportunities at different times of day. I must have captured over one hundred digital images. I really like some of them and I'll have a lot of fun going through them and altering/manipulating them.

This is my first piece, as yet untitled. I find something interesting in this composition. I'm thinking this may turn into a series, maybe a show "Walking in China Town".

The best little gallery in Syracuse. No, I said in Syracuse. Abbott's is the best little gallery just outside Syracuse. The Edgewood Gallery is, as my late friend and mentor George Welch explained, an intimate space.

Intimate perhaps, but Cheryl and Doug have a long history of presenting the best artists in the Central New York area. Tonight was the opening reception for their current show, "Markings of Time and Space". Deb and I popped in quick, but the place was packed so we didn't stay long.

As I have stated here before, I am not an art critic. I'll leave that to others, or better yet, stop by the show yourself and you decide what you like.

This exhibition features three popular artists currently working in the Syracuse area. Amy Bartell, Paul Molesky and Dan Bacich.

Amy Bartell is showing acrylic mixed media paintings examining the topography of time and ever changing horizon.

Paul Molesky - Sculptural and functional stonewear ceramics finished with clay slip and shino glazes.

Dan Bacich - Mixed media box assemblages combining fragments that invoke a narrative.

The Edge of Art: New York State Artist Series

January 30 - April 4, 2010

For the past 34 years, the Everson has featured Central New York Artists in the Everson Biennial, a juried exhibition traditionally featuring about fifty artists in one group show. This year, the Everson proudly introduces The Edge of Art, a series of contemporary art exhibitions showcasing the work of various artists living in New York State, particularly in the Central New York Region. The new format presents small-scale focused exhibitions and site-specific installations of new work.

The exhibitions will take place in the Robineau Gallery on the main level of the Everson. The collaborative pieces and site-specific installations will be presented in auxiliary galleries spaces throughout the Museum, including the Rosamond Gifford Sculpture Court and the Mather Court, both located on the lower level.

As part of the series beginning this January, Wishing Tree by Tash Taskale will be on view on the exterior podium of the Museum by the main entrance. Additionally, artist Jen Pepper will be creating a site-specific installation titled that which can not be held, based on Tautologos, a solo exhibition she first had in 2008. These works explore narrative language and culture though creatively using unexpected materials and space.

2009 - 2010 Looking Forward and Looking Back

This photo appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard in 1997 with an article about our show "Twelve Years After", a 12 year retrospective exhibition at the Salmon River Arts Center. It's Hard to believe, but we have just put another 12 years behind us!

It's time once again for my New Year's post, where I take a stroll down memory lane and remember some of the highlights and in the case of 2009 low lights of the year we leave behind.

2009 was indeed a difficult year. The recession took a toll on our business and also our art. Framing orders were down nearly 50% over past years. That was a huge hit to our finances.

I began the year with several sculpture commissions lined up. All were put on hold. I hope at least some will still be realized when the economy improves.

Thank goodness art sales didn't tank quite as much. Not really sure why that is. It almost seems that logic might dictate otherwise.

The year was not without some high points. The best of all was our son returning home after a two year absence. It has been great to have him and our granddaughter around.

We enjoyed success at a couple of shows during the spring. Deb and I both sold well at the Art Literally show in Watertown and the St. David's Celebration of the Arts. We also sold a number of Edward Elhoff paintings and works by others through our gallery. We shipped a large Jeanne Dupre Painting to a customer in Florida and internet sales to a variety of states including Washington, Georgia, Virginia, Massachusetts and Canada.

Deb finished the year strong with a half dozen paintings sold through our gallery and sales in other galleries in Canandaigua and Vermont. We were once again included in a couple of prestigious regional invitationals.

Despite the economy, we soldier on, inspired by our many long time supporters who offer encouragement and patronage. We are grateful to have them.

2010 is full of promise as each new year is. We can only hope that things will improve as we move through the winter months and into spring.

We are once again scheduled to participate in Art Literally and St. David's and we will be hanging a two person show at Edgewood Gallery in Dewitt for the month of June. We also have several other tentative group shows lined up and Deb will as every year enter the Northeast National Pastel Show at Old Forge.

I expect to participate in the shows at the Gear Factory in Syracuse and will also again enter the Everson Biennial as well as other opportunities that always come along.

2010 will be the 25th anniversary year of our gallery and we plan to host a retrospective exhibition of our work sometime in the fall. Something we have never done in all these years.

Today we say goodbye, tomorrow we say hello.

We are planning to spend the long weekend in the studio, full of energy and new ideas.

Happy New Year! May we all have health, prosperity, peace and happiness!

"Turner to Cezanne" - Everson Museum, Syracuse

Well we finally made it to this much vaunted exhibition. We were not disappointed the show was everything and more than we had expected. There is something profoundly moving to stand before some of the greatest works of impressionist art ever created by the worlds most lauded artists.

Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Renoir, VanGogh and on and on. A veritable whos' who of impressionist painters. The Everson Museum is fortunate to be one of five museums in North America to host this exhibition. A considerable achievement for a small city art museum.

My only regret was that we waited to go on the Sunday afternoon following Christmas, and so it seems did everyone else. The exhibition has been well attended since opening in October, but this particular day was the busiest I have ever seen the Everson. I do not know, but would not be surprised if they set a single day attendance record. Deb and I have been to many shows and functions at the Everson over the last twenty five years and have never seen a crowd like that.

On the one hand it was wonderful to see so many turn out for the show, on the other it made it difficult to really take the time to fully absorb the art the way I would have liked to. It was at times difficult to basically nudge your way to a place where you had a decent view.

The show is up for one more week and I highly recommend seeing it if you have not already, however, go during the week if you can. Just a thought!

"REPLY" at the Gear Factory

Deb and I opened at two shows this past Saturday. We had planned to attend both openings, but things didn't work out. I had to be in Latham all day and just couldn't make it to Oswego for the Postmodernism Invitational, "Willful Eclecticism".

Here are a few photos from the opening at The Gear Factory in Syracuse for the "Reply" show.

The top photo is my son Kevin and I standing next to my display. I exhibited a collection of figurative photographs and collage works.

The second snap shot is our friend and fellow artist, Eileen Arnold.

The last photograph is of me and Hall Groat. Hall and I have been friends for years and I used to see him a lot back in my days at Syracuse Sales and PB&H Moulding. I rarely run into Hall these days, so it was nice to see him. Hall is a very accomplished artist and good person. I always enjoy visiting with him. Hall was at the show with his daughter Gretchen also a wonderful artist

Two Shows Open Saturday Oct. 10

Deb and I are going to be busy this Saturday October 10. We are both in two shows opening on the same day.

The Art Association of Oswego is hosting "Willful Eclecticism" a postmodern invitational exhibition at the Timothy McHenry Gallery, Oswego Civic Arts Center.

An artists reception will be held from 7-9pm on Saturday, October, 10.

Willful Eclecticism will feature CNY artists whose work embodies a Postmodern approach. Selected area artists have been asked to submit artwork along with an explanation of its relationship to Postmodern themes such as conscious borrowing of ideas or imagery, skepticism toward universal beliefs, and reaction against modernist strategies of image-making.

Opening concurrently in the Jo Hyse Gallery on the first floor of the Arts Center will be a new exhibition of artwork by the members of Hat Factory, a local art collective of emerging artists whose work is diverse and cutting-edge.

The Oswego Civic Arts Center is located at the northernmost end of East 4th Street in Oswego, directly across from Fort Ontario.

Shadows in the Sunshine: Winslow Homer's Nervous Nostalgia in the 1870s
Dr. Burns will focus on Homer's imagery of childhood in the 1870s, in particular the Gloucester watercolors of 1873 and 1880. Homer produced these works during a time of intense popular nostalgia for lost youth, both personal and, in aftermath of the Civil War, national. Along with nostalgic sentiment, images of children in the 1870s proffered the vision of a bright new generation that would smooth away the scars of war. But for Homer, who had witnessed and documented that war, forebodings tempered such hope, and shadows haunted both past and present. Burns will discuss Homer's seemingly carefree scenes as expressions of the artist's own acute awareness of time's passage and as modern variants on the romantic metaphor of the "Voyage of Life."

This beautiful barn painting in winter is an original acrylic on masonite by the late Edward J. Elhoff. Mr. Elhoff was one of the foremost painters of the north eastern United States from the time his career took off in the early 1960's until his death in 1988. Elhoff's work received numerous awards and was selected for inclusion in the top juried shows in North America. His work was also featured in many fine art publications of the day and he was represented by top galleries in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New England and Florida.

I have enjoyed very good sales of photographs and digital images over the years. The last several months in particular have been exceptional despite the poor economy.

This image is part of an experimental body of work that I am presently working on. I am printing these images 20" X 30" and transferring them to canvas. I also plan to apply bees wax and resin over the top to give them a hand painted quality and appearance. I have done similar work in the past on a smaller scale.

The advantage to this process is it will be possible to make multiples therefore allow more affordable pricing. I will however make no more than ten of any image and only one at a time. In essence a limited edition print hand applied enhancement.

These will sell framed for $600.00 whereas an abstract painting this size would be twice as much or more.

Patrick V. Farrow

Patrick has been a professional sculptor for over 35 years. Raised in Hollywood and Europe, he left New York City thirty years ago to pursue his art in the peaceful mountains of Vermont. A 'fellow' in the National Sculpture Society, he has received numerous national awards; including those of the Allied Artists of America and the National Sculpture Society.

I have often written about the artists who influenced and inspired my art. Patrick Farrow was exactly that. Although I never met Mr. Farrow, I developed a real appreciation for his whimsical sculptures and made many visits to the Peale Gallery in Vermont where I first encountered his work in the early 1980's.

Recently I was saddened to learn of his death. He will no doubt be missed by his family and friends, but also by those of us who admired him for his work as an artist.

CASTLETON, Vt. - The brother of actress Mia Farrow has been found dead in his art gallery, and police said yesterday his death is suspicious.
Sculptor Patrick Farrow, 66, was found late Monday by police responding to an emergency call from the Farrow Gallery, in Castleton, a small town near the New York border. A woman there had called asking for help.

An autopsy was planned. Police said that they wouldn't release additional information until it was complete.

State police Lt. Timothy Oliver called Farrow's death suspicious in a written statement yesterday. Oliver told WPTZ-TV that police don't suspect foul play, but he said there were some things out of the ordinary at the scene. He didn't elaborate.

Farrow, a professional sculptor for more than 35 years, operated out of a converted church building. The Farrow Gallery sells jewelry and mixed-media works of art, according to its Web site. The gallery is owned and operated by Farrow and his wife, artist Susan Farrow.

Mia Farrow, whose movies include "Rosemary's Baby," "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors," is the former longtime companion of director Woody Allen. Their relationship ended in scandal and New York tabloid headlines in 1992, when she found out that he was having an affair with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, then 22.

Farrow is the daughter of director John Farrow and actress Maureen O'Sullivan.

Last year, a nephew of Mia Farrow and Patrick Farrow who had spent nearly 20 years in the Army was killed in Iraq.

Sgt. 1st Class Jason F. Dene, 37, died of injuries suffered in an incident in Baghdad, according to the Department of Defense, which gave no other details about his death except to say it was under investigation.

Patrick Farrow said after his nephew's May 25, 2008, death that he felt as though he had been "kicked in the stomach."

"I've been opposed to this war since the beginning," Farrow said then. "This lying Bush administration has gotten into this thing that has now killed my nephew. It's up close and personal, and I am deeply angry." *

These pieces have been posted here before, but I have been getting interest in some new projects and thought this would be good to show prospective clients. Both are steel fabrications made of mild steel, cut, shaped, welded and powder coated. These two pieces are both out door sculptures that are mounted on top of concrete pedestals which are sitting on a footer. (click on an image to view larger)

The piece at the top is titled "Organica" and is installed in front of the Central Square, NY Public Library. The sculpture was made possible by a grant from the New State Council for the Arts, (NYSCA). "Organica" is a modernist style piece inspired by a piece of sea weed I found on a beach in Nova Scotia.

The second piece is titled "Of Course It Is". An Ayn Rand inspired modern,industrial statement that stands over 9 feet tall on it's pedestal and is 54 " wide at it's widest point.

I currently have two residential projects pending and two public projects on hold due to funding.

I am happy to design sculptures for interior or exterior settings and work can be done in stainless steel, *Corten and the painted mild steel shown here.

Pricing is determined by design, size and materials.

*Corten steel is a steel that actually rusts for a natural aged look. The steel will only rust to a certain point and then due to chemical reactions actually hardens.

I was in Albany yesterday and was just stunned by this Calder piece at the Empire State Plaza. Alexander Calder has long been one of my favorite sculptors. This piece is so powerful with the reflecting pools and the Ayn Rand, "Fountainhead" inspired modern architecture towering behind it.

"Average Gangsters/Average Politicians"

This collage was done back in the early 1990's but I thought it was a good time to bring it out of retirement. This piece is part of a large series from that period and touches on a little political commentary. I nearly named it Republicans and Democrats but.............. I guess that's just the Libertarian in me!

Adrien Brody

I ran into our new celebrity neighbor Saturday, non other than the academy award winning actor Adrien Brody. Mr. Brody bought a local landmark, the "Stone Barn Castle" a well known property in the north shore area.

Unconfirmed rumors now suggest his friend Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio may have also purchased property in the area. We'll have to wait and see.

Mr. Brody won an Oscar for his role in the film "The Pianist" and has recently appeared in a number of big films such as King Kong, The Darjeeling Limited and Cadillac Records. He is superb in all of these films. The Darjeeling may be my favorite. That kind of off beat, quirky humor just strikes a chord with me. I also enjoyed him as the lead character in "The Jacket", kind of a dark film about a war veteran returning home to Vermont. He was also magnificent in the "The Affair of the Necklace" although I wish he had a bigger role in that one.

Adrien welcome to the area! We will try to be respectful of your privacy, but nevertheless hope to make your acquaintance soon! Stop by the gallery sometime.

Last Tuesday, April 29 Debe and I were both officially inducted into the Central Square School District Hall of Fame for the Visual and Performing Arts. This honor is special as neither one of us went to school here. We were inducted for our now 24 plus years of promoting the arts in the community. The presentation was well attended and was part of an evening of performances and music and art. They really did a wonderful job. We are grateful to be recognized in this way.

We are both participating in this the 39th annual St. David's Celebration of the Arts (COTA) in Dewitt, NY. It is my understanding that we both have sold work at the show which hangs through Sunday.

Yesterday I delivered eight paintings and photographs to the Flower Memorial Library in Watertown, NY for ART LITERALLY. This annual fundraiser will hang in the Library May 18th - June 6. There will be Gala Friday evening May 29 to raise money for the Library and the American Red Cross of Northern New York. Tickets are $75.00 per couple or $40.00 per individual.

The *Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library is a beautiful historical building. Some smaller state house around the country are not as nice as this. I say state house as the building has a rotunda complete with frescoes, lots of marbel and granite. It really is quite impressive.

*Mr. Roswell Pettibone Flower was the assistant postmaster in Watertown. He later became a wealthy businessman who went on to become Governor of New York in the late 1800's.

Our new on-line art magazine for modern art has started to really take off. The project began in November 2008 on a whim. I just wanted a blog for strictly our contemporary works. A place to show the abstractions and collages and figurative work. I also decided to post an occasional "Guest Artist".

The "Guest Artist" thing turned out to be an unexpectedly huge draw. Very quickly artists from all over North America discovered the site and began sending images and artist statements, hoping to be featured on the site. By early January I was getting dozens of submissions every week. It was at this point that I decided to make the "Guest Artist" thing a weekly post.

Since November we have posted work by artists from Brooklyn, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Denver, two from England, Miami, Minneapolis, Portland, San Francisco and Syracuse.

Subscribers and viewers have been primarily from the US, Canada and Europe, but we do get readers from all over the world.

I do not charge these artists nor are they compensated. I only ask for a link exchange and for them to help spread the word about TIMEFORFRIDA. By the end of February we had several hundred subscribers and are averaging well over one thousand page views a week and growing, not hits, actual page views.

Not too much recent news to report. Dealing with winter and looking forward to spring. The days are getting longer which brings some new energy.

I have several possible sculpture projects lined up for this spring and summer that will be very exciting. I am also actively seeking commissions for 2009.

Deb and I have received word that we will be inducted into the PV Moore High School Visual and Performing Arts Hall of Fame this spring. Neither one of us went to school here, but we are being inducted for our long standing support of the arts in the community. An honor we gladly accept.

Deb has been getting her entries ready for the Northeast National Pastel Show and show materials are starting to come in for St. Davids, Watertown and other spring shows.

The economy has slowed things some but we will soldier on!

"Home Again" by Kevin Abbott II

"Home Again" by Kevin Abbott II stands over seven feet tall and is made of ice and snow on South Main St. next to our gallery in Central Square.

Perhaps wanting to express his joy of being home again and inspired by the documentary film "Rivers and Tides" by Andy Goldsworthy. Kevin set out to use the ice and snow he had just removed from the porch roofs of our building at 628 So. Main St.

The sculpture evokes the spirit of Winter Carnival and is reminiscent of Stone Henge.

I am in the process of reworking this blog and am going to go through and "retire" or "archive some of the images that I previously had in the side bar. This painting is a mixed media on canvas ( encaustic and oil). The canvas measures 24" X 24" and sold for $1,800.00. This piece garnered several awards at some prestigious regional shows including two Best of Show awards and one First Place in Mixed Media. I am happy to say this painting is part of a wonderful collection in the Syracuse area.

MODIGLIANI - The Movie

No I'm not a film critic and won't try to become one here, but I am going to suggest this film for artists, art historians and anyone who just enjoys a good movie set in post WWI Paris. Andy Garcia is fabulous as always in his portrayal of this hugely talented but tormented artist. A great look at the Paris of Hemingway,Fitzgerald, Picasso and Gertrude Stein. I think most will enjoy this sad but skillful narrative.

Set in Paris in 1919, biopic centers on the life of late Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, focusing on his last days as well as his rivalry with Pablo Picasso. Modigliani, a Jew, has fallen in love with Jeanne, a young and beautiful Catholic girl. The couple has an illegitimate child, and Jeanne's bigoted parents send the baby to a faraway convent to be raised by nuns. Modigliani is distraught and needs money to rescue and raise his child. The answer arrives in the shape of Paris' annual art competition. Prize money and a guaranteed career await the winner. Neither Modigliani, nor his dearest friend and rival Picasso have ever entered the competition, believing that it is beneath true artists like themselves. But push comes to shove with the welfare of his child on the line, and Modigliani signs up for the competition in a drunken and drug-induced tirade. Picasso follows suit and all of Paris is aflutter with excitement at who will win. With the balance of his relationship with Jeanne on the line, Modigliani tackles this work with the hopes of creating a masterpiece, and knows that all the artists of Paris are doing the same. Asheville, North Carolina is a favorite destination for me. Nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina this small city is not only beautiful for the mountain atmosphere but also a cultural gem in the region. There are more art galleries per capita than any other city on the east coast. Asheville is likened to Taos and Santa Fe. The now famous River Arts District's "Studio Stroll" draws art lovers from New York, Ann Arbor and as far away as California. The restaurants, hippies and street entertainers make Asheville a fun place to visit.

In 2006 I was visiting the Asheville area when by chance I discovered Black Mountain, NC. Black Mountain is a small town just east of Asheville and was home to one of this country's most avant garde colleges, Black Mountain College. I say was, as the school has been gone for over 50 years, but during it's twenty plus years it attracted some of the most forward thinkers and artists of the mid 20th century. The faculty and students were a veritable Who's Who of modernists and post modernists.

It was at Black Mountain College that Buckminster Fuller developed the geodesic dome. The first "happening" took place. Joseph Albers, Willem DeKooning and Robert Rauschenberg are just a few of the names associated with BMC.

I visited the former campus where little remains of the once controversial school. The bauhaus style, student built studies building remains as a testament to the radical vision that was Black Mountain College.

It was at Black Mountain College that Merce Cunningham formed his dance company, John Cage staged his first "happening," and Buckminster Fuller built his first dome. Although it lasted only twenty-four years (1933-1957) and enrolled fewer than 1,200 students, Black Mountain College launched a remarkable number of the artists who spearheaded the avant-garde in America of the 1960s. The faculty included such diverse talents as Anni and Josef Albers, Eric Bentley, Ilya Bolotowsky, Robert Creeley, Willem de Kooning, Robert Duncan, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Goodman, Walter Gropius, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and Charles Olson. Among the students were Ruth Asawa, John Chamberlain, Francine du Plessix Gray, Kenneth Noland, Arthur Penn, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Snelson, Cy Twombly, Stan Vanderbeek, and Jose Yglesias.

In this definitive account of the arts at Black Mountain College, back in print after many years, Mary Emma Harris describes a unique educational experiment and the artists and writers who conducted it. She replaces the myth of the college as a haphazardly conceived venture with a portrait of a consciously directed liberal arts school that grew out of the progressive education movement. Proceeding chronologically through the four major periods of the college's history, Harris covers every aspect of its extraordinary curriculum in the visual, literary, and performing arts.

"Boys With Sticks"

"Boys With Sticks", 1992, mixed media collage. A good example of the work that I was doing in the mid 1980's through the mid 1990's. This piece sold at the Pyramid Art Center in Rochester, NY in 1994.

I have always liked this collage. So much so that I am going to revisit it by enlarging this image and printing it to be part of a new bigger resin or beeswax piece.

The original measured only approx. 11" X 14" and was primarily blues and grays. I now am going to go for a more earthy look by printing it in sepia tone and work off those colors.
