Shaped Paintings
Some new shaped paintings as I gear up for my show at the Vue at Lake Eola in Orlando. Kirsten Gjermo is curating the show and she first took notice of my small shaped paintings I did in the spring (2017). We exchanged correspondence over the summer while Deb and I were in New York.
She and I agreed that I needed to scale them up for this space. That was my intention and the small pieces were an opportunity for me to work through some of the technical considerations.
I hope to continue to work larger as I continue to explore this concept.
I am encouraged by the positive feed back that these works are getting. Many of the initial small shaped paintings sold right away.
Stay tuned as I post more of these as I finish them.

"Magnanimous Pour"
This painting represents a bit of a departure for me. Basically I set out to chase color and energy in the tradition of the New New Painters. This relatively small piece measures 24" X 24" X 2.5" . Acrylic on Sanded Birch panel.
This is most likely the last painting I will finish before I "roll up the tent" for the summer and head north to my studio in New York.

"Small Odd Shapes"
Each year the resident artists at Gallery on First in Sanford put together an exhibition we call 100 for $100. A collection of works priced at $100.00 or less.
Some artists use this as an annual garage sale and mark down older or less successful work. A chance to clean out the studio.
Debe and I do not take that approach. While it is difficult to do work in this price range, we always come up with a series of new work made specifically for this two day show.
In my case, I experiment with ideas that I may want to try on a larger scale. It allows me a chance to work through both aesthetic and technical issues on a small scale.
The pieces pictured above are examples of my series "Small Odd Shapes" made for the 2017 show.
Inspired by the work of post-minimalist Richard Tuttle and the large scale shaped canvases of Kenneth Noland, Susan Roth and Graham Peacock. I have long admired the work of these artists, but have yet made an attempt at large scale shaped work. These miniature works ( 15" X 5"ish X 1") are mixed media on wood.

New Barn/Studio

We have a barn. Still more to do next summer to finish it up. We will add more windows in both gable ends and on the front left side facing the pond. We also hope to add a ten foot "bump out" shed addition for a framing area and a small solar array with led lighting.
In any case we made a lot of progress this summer. We started clearing trees and doing the site week the 4th of July weekend. The following week we began prepping for the concrete slab.
Our heartfelt thanks to our son Kevin Abbott II and Ken Doria of Ken Doria Construction. Also Karl Hoyt for help with the site work.

New Studio
A long time coming. Twenty one this fall actually. That's how long Deb and I have dreamed of building a barn/studio at our place in the woods know by family and friends as Dragonwood http://thedragonwoodchronicles.blogspot.com/.
We have our drawings and are ready to build a 18' X 28' foot barn.
We have done the site work, cutting trees, clearing the land, bringing in fill and grading off for a level building site. This week we hope to get the foundation, a monolithic concrete slab finished. Then after a few days of curing and permiting we can begin the frame up. Should go fast once the foundation is complete.
I will post photos of the progress.

"Blue Dancer" SOLD
This painting measures 16" X 20" and is one of fifteen small canvases I am displaying at this year's 100 for $100 show at Gallery on First in Sanford. The show is an annual event that has proven popular in past years.
I have made this series of small paintings. Some are studies for larger paintings. Some are just experimental ideas. Things I'm trying out. This one and several others are based on my figurative steel sculptures. Scroll down and you will see similarity to "Persephone". This painting is offered unframed at $100.00. Typically framed similar paintings sell in the $350 - $450 range.

This is my latest figurative wall mounted steel piece. "Gaia" or earth goddess, mother earth. Somewhat more literal figuratively, therefore more sexually evocative than earlier works.
